The Morgan Plus 4 Super Sports
"Le Mans 62"
First in the 2 litre Grand Touring Cars Class
July 2002
Morgan Plus 4 SS at Le Mans
The Morgan company has been family owned since it's inception in 1910. It originally made 3 wheelers only (with a single rear wheel), but in 1936 the company branched out into 4 wheel car. They launched the Morgan 4/4 (4 wheels/4 cylinders) and later the Plus 4 which had independent front suspension and an inline four cylinder engine ranging in size from 1,991 to 2,138 cc. The name Plus 4 came from the chassis being stretched by 4 inches over the previous 4/4 models to incorporate larger engines, like the 68 bhp Vanguard motor with a top speed of 85 mph or 138 km/h. A special feature of the car is that its chassis was made of a treated ash hardwood frame.
In 1962 Christopher Lawrence and Richard Sheppard-Baron won the 2 litre class at the 24 hours endurance race at Le Mans with a special prepared Plus Four Super Sports. This was a great success for the Morgan company.
